Hello All,

It seems about time to let you in on some developments here at BoatingABC.com.

We are moving again to a new server very soon. This one is more powerful and should be able to handle the load quite a bit better.

At the same time, we are integrating the Photo Gallery Site with the forums.

There will no longer be a separate login for the Photo Site as it will use the same User Tables as the forums. Once integrated, if you are logged into the forums, you are automatically logged into the photo gallery.

My plan is to leave the photos currently posted at the old photo site intact so they will continue to display in postings here on the forums. The links will not be broken.

However, that version of the Photo Gallery software will be taken off line. After the move, if you go to http://www.babc-photos.com/photos, you will only see a page that informs of the move.

I am giving you a heads up in case anyone needs to do anything with the photos that are posted on that site now. Once the move is made, you will no longer have the ability to edit or delete the images you have uploaded there. There is no easy way to import them over to the new installation of the software and I am not going to attempt it.

Of course, you will be more than welcome to repost them to the new gallery once it is available to you.

Another development concurrent with the move is that we will be upgrading to a new version of the forum software. This newer version will add some new features and squash a bug or three.

I have a few more things simmering on the front burner, but will let them be a surprise once the move is made. ;\)

One last thing for now...

The images that display in the header are WAY overdue for an update. Not like I do not have enough to do already, but this one has been bugging me for a while and that round toit is about in reach.

So...

Use up some of that wintertime restlessness and start digging through those boating pics you've taken this past season. Select one (or a few) that you'd like to see up there and send them to me.

Here is how to do so. Please follow these instructions exactly.
  • Attach the original images as they came from your camera to an e-mail. Please do NOT embed them into the e-mail itself.
  • Put "Header Image" in the subject line.
  • In the body of your e-mail list the following information.
    • Your Display Name on the forums
    • Any caption that you'd prefer I use. I will come up with something if you do not supply one. ;\) If you supply more than one image, please be sure to let me know what caption goes with which image.
  • Send the e-mail to boatingabc AT comcast dot net

Note that I will be looking over images posted to the Photo Gallery and anything there is fair game.

That's about all for now folks. I will give some warning before the move. The Forums will be off line for an extended period of time on the given day.

Have a good one!

Dare I hope this includes some of the Search bugs? Such as finally being able to use search tokens of only 3 characters?

I know it says that there is a period where it will be off line, but could there be an overlapping time after that for us to go into the current photo site and copy the photos over to the new site.

Cool!

For images, do you want them reduced in size at all?

Kelly,

PM coming your way.

DeepV,

Yes that is the address. I did not type it out in proper format due to not wanting bots to pick up that address and spam it to death.

I could leave the old photo site active for a time. This would put me in violation of the licensing for the software. I could inquire to see if they do not have a problem with it for a week or so.

Al,

No resizing is necessary. I will crop and resize them as needed to fit the format I need/want.

Admin,

How about a sticky forum. There are a few world class threads/replies that are notable to re-reference time and again....

Maybe just a Sticky or Wall of Fame or Hall of Fame Forum would keep them all together without taking headroom away from the main forum areas...

Edit Reason: other possible titles...

Not a bad idea there. Easy enough to do.

I think I made this suggestion before, but I think a dedicated " Berthing Room " reserved on for those " expecting " ;).

A special place for those enduring an endless winter waiting to see thier new baby.

BTW, the Search here on the old site is crippled. Works Ok for normal searches in the "in subject and body" mode. But the "in subject" only mode causes all BABC navigation to freeze. The only recovery then is to close out and relaunch the browser itself.
